Expanding Clear Ice Production for Growing Commercial Orders in China

China · Commercial Ice Producer · TB30 · 3000kg/Batch · Capacity Expansion

For our customer in China, clear ice was already an established product.

The problem came later.

As orders from beverage and premium ice customers increased, existing production capacity began to limit how much business the company could accept. The customer no longer needed to test whether there was demand for clear ice. It needed more production capacity to serve demand that was already developing.

We supplied a TB30 clear ice block machine with a production capacity of 3000 kg per batch.

For this project, the TB30 was not a market-entry machine. It was an expansion investment designed to remove an existing production constraint.

When Demand Grows Faster Than Production

There is an important difference between starting an ice business and expanding one.

A new producer first needs to prove that customers exist.

An established producer eventually faces another question:

Can the factory make enough product to keep accepting larger orders?

That was the situation behind this project.

The customer was already supplying commercial clear ice, but increasing demand from beverage businesses and premium ice buyers put pressure on existing production.

Limited output can affect more than daily tonnage. It can restrict order size, reduce flexibility during busy periods and make it harder to take on new commercial customers without affecting existing supply.

The customer therefore needed to increase production at the clear-block stage.

The TB30 added 3000 kg of clear ice capacity per batch, creating a larger production base for the next stage of the business.

Expanding the Right Part of the Production Line

Clear ice production does not finish when the block leaves the machine.

For many commercial customers, the block still needs to be cut or shaped into the final product.

That means increasing block production can expose another bottleneck further down the line.

The production flow can be viewed as:

clear ice blocks → cutting/shaping → finished premium ice → packaging → customer orders

If the first stage increases significantly while cutting capacity remains unchanged, the factory may simply move its constraint from ice making to processing.

This is particularly relevant in a 3000 kg/batch project.

A larger volume of clear blocks gives the customer more raw ice to work with, but the downstream operation has to be capable of converting that production into saleable cubes, spheres, cocktail ice or other customized formats.

For this China project, expansion was therefore about more than installing a larger machine.

The TB30 needed to become part of an existing commercial production flow.

That is also why we avoid using a simple calculation such as:

3000 kg × selling price = revenue

The real commercial output depends on finished product dimensions, cutting yield, processing time, labor, packaging and the mix of products being sold.

For an established premium ice producer, those numbers are more meaningful than the nominal weight of the clear blocks alone.

Removing One Bottleneck Without Creating Another

We supported the customer with equipment documentation, production guidance and technical assistance during setup and testing.

After commissioning, the TB30 became part of the customer’s expanded commercial clear ice production system.

The 3000 kg/batch capacity allowed the company to increase its clear-block production base and better support larger commercial orders.

For us, the most useful part of this project is the reason the customer invested.

It was not simply because a larger machine was available.

The business had reached a point where existing production was becoming a constraint on further growth.

That is an important distinction when we work with established ice producers.

Expansion equipment should solve the bottleneck that actually limits the business. If clear-block production is the constraint, additional ice-making capacity can be the right investment. If cutting, storage or packaging is already the limiting stage, adding only more block production may not solve the underlying problem.

In this China project, the requirement was additional clear ice production.

The Koller TB30 provided a new 3000 kg/batch production platform, helping the customer move from limited existing capacity toward a larger commercial clear ice operation.

The project represents a different stage of the premium ice business:

not entering the market, but building enough production capacity to keep growing in it.
