For our customer in Tanzania, the project started with a practical business question: how much ice production is enough to enter the local market without building an oversized plant too early?
The customer planned to produce block ice for local sales and distribution. The target was approximately 2 tons per day, with equipment that could fit a developing commercial operation and remain straightforward to manage.
We supplied a Koller DK20 direct cooling block ice machine rated at 2 tons per 24 hours.
This was not a project where bigger automatically meant better. The value of the DK20 was that its production scale matched the stage of the customer’s business.
Starting with Capacity the Market Can Use
For a new local ice supplier, unused production capacity can be just as relevant as insufficient capacity.
A larger machine may produce more ice, but that additional output only becomes useful when there are enough customers to buy it, enough space to handle it and a distribution network capable of moving it.
The Tanzania customer was building around local demand rather than starting with a large industrial ice plant.
The DK20 produces 2 tons of block ice per 24 hours and supports 5 kg and 10 kg block options. Its machine dimensions are approximately 3800 × 900 × 1600 mm, giving the customer commercial production capacity in a relatively compact installation. 2 Ton Koller Ice Block Machine …
Those specifications fit the business model particularly well.
Smaller blocks are practical when ice needs to be handled and distributed locally. Depending on the buyer, the finished block ice can be used for food and beverage cooling, fish and seafood preservation, cold-chain handling and other everyday commercial applications. 2 Ton Koller Ice Block Machine …
The customer therefore had a machine capable of serving several types of local buyers without beginning with the infrastructure of a much larger ice factory.
Direct Cooling Without a Traditional Brine Tank
The DK20 uses direct cooling technology.
Water freezes inside aluminum ice molds through the refrigeration system rather than using a conventional saltwater brine tank. For a developing ice business, this creates a more straightforward block ice production workflow. 2 Ton Koller Ice Block Machine …
This project also uses a 12 kW compressor configuration.
But the most useful number for the customer remains the daily output: 2 tons/day.
At that production level, a simple business calculation can be made from actual local sales information:
Daily gross sales = kilograms of ice sold × local selling price per kilogram
The important word is sold, not produced.
A machine capable of making 2,000 kg per day does not automatically create revenue from all 2,000 kg. The commercial result depends on how much ice the business can actually sell and distribute.
That is why we would rather size a first commercial project around realistic demand than recommend a larger machine simply because more capacity is available.
A Production Base the Business Can Grow From
We provided installation guidance and commissioning support for the Tanzania project, including system checks, refrigeration testing and trial ice production before regular operation. 2 Ton Koller Ice Block Machine …
The completed DK20 gives the customer a dedicated source of block ice for local commercial supply.
For us, that is what makes this project useful.
It is not a story about building the largest ice plant possible. It is about establishing the right production base for the first stage of a local ice business.
If sales increase and the distribution network develops, capacity can be reconsidered at the next stage.
The first machine does not need to be the biggest machine.
It needs to fit the business that exists today.
