Inside a 10-Ton Flake Ice Project for Seafood Processing

In Koller’s Indonesia project, the flake ice machine was not installed to produce ice for resale. It was installed to become part of the customer’s daily seafood-processing operation.

The Indonesian customer required continuous ice for cooling seafood during processing, handling and storage. Koller supplied a KP100 flake ice machine rated at 10 tons per 24 hours, with the project focused on stable daily production, fast cooling and even ice coverage.

The interesting part of this installation is therefore not the 10-ton figure itself. It is how one ice machine supports several points inside a processing facility.

Putting Ice Where Processing Needs It

Seafood does not move directly from receiving to refrigerated storage.

Depending on the operation, product may pass through receiving, sorting, preparation, temporary holding and internal transportation before it reaches the next temperature-controlled stage.

The Indonesian customer needed ice to remain available throughout these daily operations.

This was one reason flake ice suited the project. Its thin, loose structure allows operators to distribute it across seafood and containers rather than using large hard pieces concentrated in only a few areas.

Koller’s flake ice machines produce dry, porous, thin ice intended for high-contact cooling applications. Seafood preservation and food processing are among the main uses of the series.

For the Indonesia installation, this translated into a practical production requirement: the machine needed to make ice continuously enough to support the plant’s working rhythm.

That is different from simply calculating one day’s total ice consumption.

A processor may use more ice during receiving or active processing hours and considerably less during other parts of the day. How ice moves from the machine to the work area can therefore be almost as important as how much ice the machine makes.

The KP100 as Processing Equipment

Koller supplied the KP100 for this project with a rated capacity of 10 tons per 24 hours. The current KP series specifications identify the KP100 as a water-cooled freshwater flake ice model.

Instead of reproducing the entire product specification on the case page, the relevant project information is how that production capacity was used.

The machine provides a dedicated source of ice inside the customer’s own operation. This reduces the separation between “ice supply” and “seafood processing”: ice becomes another production utility that can be generated as part of the plant’s daily schedule.

Before delivery, Koller completed equipment preparation and factory testing. Project support also covered equipment packing and loading, installation guidance, refrigeration-system checks, trial operation and operating adjustments. The original project record states that the machine reached stable production after commissioning.

That commissioning stage matters in an in-plant project because the equipment has to work with the customer’s actual utilities and operating environment rather than only perform correctly during factory testing.

What We Learned from the Indonesia Installation

For Koller, this project demonstrates an important difference between supplying an ice business and supplying a processing plant.

An ice supplier starts with customers and distribution.

A seafood processor starts with product flow.

When Koller evaluates this type of project, the useful information includes daily seafood throughput, peak receiving periods, the points where ice is added, internal handling methods, available storage and the site’s water and power conditions.

Those details help determine whether the requirement is simply additional ice capacity or a better way of integrating ice into the production process.

The Indonesia project resulted in a dedicated 10-ton/day KP100 system supporting daily seafood processing, handling and storage.

Its value as a Koller reference project is therefore straightforward: the machine is not the end of the process.

It is equipment that works inside the process.
